PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) tools have permeated our daily lives in an almost unavoidable way. Large language model (LLM) chatbots showcase remarkable capabilities in generating coherent and intelligent responses to a wide array of queries. While regulatory frameworks and ethical standards are still developing, popular chatbots, such as ChatGPT, are already being used actively by both patients and clinicians. There is a tremendous need for clinicians to understand the nuances of these tools. This panel seeks to fill this gap, providing tips, pearls, and pitfalls that are immediately relevant to clinical practice. The panelists will discuss commonly used and publicly available LLM tools, as well as a range of upcoming software designed for clinicians. Basic concepts of LLM, including training data, bias, “knowledge” limitations, and prompt engineering will be demonstrated by using real and specific examples. The panel will also discuss privacy, security, and HIPAA considerations in task automation for clinical productivity, such as summarizing Vizient reviews, identifying trends in patient questions, and generating pre- or postoperative instructions. Participants can expect to review the most up-to-date policies for LLM use in academic writing, including letters of recommendation, personal statements, research proposal, manuscript review and creation. With escalating clinical volumes and growing academic demands, otolaryngologists have a substantial opportunity to use chatbots to improve clinical productivity and efficiency. This panel is a pragmatic introduction to safe and effective usage of LLM-based AI tools in everyday practice, improving quality of life for both providers and patients, while reducing stress and burnout.
