PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Sialendoscopy and ultrasound have dramatically changed the management of salivary gland duct calculi. The goals of this panel are first to present a standardized ultrasound protocol for submandibular salivary gland assessment. Ultrasound can help differentiate inflammatory from neoplastic disease and can help define stone location and assess the impact of treatment. The published level of evidence and the science for submandibular gland ultrasound and for trans-oral removal of submandibular gland stones with or without Sialendoscopy will be explored. Risk, benefits, and possible complications of techniques will be reviewed. A point/counterpoint 2-person debate with two leaders in the field will contrast the indication and necessity or lack thereof for Sialendoscopy for distal, mid duct and proximal stones for selected scenarios. Case presentations and discussion interweaving the potential role of Ultrasound with Sialendoscopy and Surgery will ensue.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Present a standardized ultrasound protocol for salivary gland assessment.
  2. Analyze the level of evidence for transoral removal of submandibular duct stones with or without Sialendoscopy.
  3. Compare opinions of two recognized leaders in the field on transoral removal of distal, mid, and proximal submandibular gland stones with or without Sialendoscopy.
