Mentoring as a Catalyst for Career Development and Enhancing Research Capacity in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) faces unique challenges, including limited access to specialized training and research opportunities. This disparity hinders the advancement of OHNS care and widens the gap between LMICs and HICs. Recognizing the transformative potential of mentorship and sponsorship in career development, there is an urgent need to implement structured, sustainable programs that can bridge these gaps. The pivotal role of mentorship in bridging research and educational gaps in OHNS, particularly in LMICs. This panel is a cornerstone of the mission to enhance the availability, accessibility, and quality of OHNS care globally. Our panel will delve into the mentoring strategies, which bolster research skills and confidence among participants. A key focus is the robust mentor-mentee relationship between members from LMICs and high-income countries (HICs), aiming to uplift LMIC mentors' capabilities. The panel will highlight the necessity of a structured approach to tackle complex issues in global OHNS research, emphasizing the importance of building research capacity worldwide. Through a conceptual framework, this panel will guide participants in establishing productive, directional mentor-mentee relationships between LMICs and HICs. This framework accentuates personalized program activities, addresses mentee’s needs and perspectives, and emphasizes maintaining dynamic, mutually beneficial mentor-mentee interactions. We will also explore the broader implications of this model, which adapts global frameworks for broader implementation across various surgical disciplines within global health. The panel will address the historical challenges of neocolonialism in research collaborations and advocate for equitable partnerships, ensuring that LMIC researchers have appropriate representation. This discussion is not only about reinforcing existing mentorship practices but also about innovating new pathways for bi-directional mentorship, promoting meaningful engagement.
