PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: We have witnessed significant changes in Thyroid surgery in the past quarter century. We have seen the decline then rise of the hemi thyroidectomy for the treatment of most benign and many malignant thyroid conditions. Within this arc, we have seen observation and ablation as therapeutic approaches emerge and gain wide acceptance. What is the future? Where do we go from here? A debate of current proliferation of ablation vs. open thyroid surgery for benign and early malignant disease will be had.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand recent trends in open thyroid surgery.
  2. Understand trends in thyroid malignancy observation and ablation technologies.
  3. Understand differential risk profiles between open surgery and observation/ablation.
