Update on the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) for Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery

The last several decades have seen a marked evolution in the performance of thyroid and parathyroid surgery. A new focused practice designation (FPD) for Adult Complex Thyroid/ Parathyroid Surgery, co-administered by the American Board of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) and the American Board of Surgery (ABS), will offer otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons the opportunity to demonstrate their particular expertise in this area. During this session the background, eligibility, application process, exam blueprint, and other exam details of the FPD will be discussed. As the potential impact of the FPD on the field may be broad, otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons of all career-levels, including residents and fellows, are encouraged to attend. Time will be dedicated for questions and discussion.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to articulate the eligibility criteria, training and practice pathways, and process by which the FPD for Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery will be able to be obtained.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to assess the potential value in their clinical practice of attaining the FPD for Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to differentiate between subspeciality certification and focused practice designation.
