Great Debate: Controversies in Cochlear Implantation: The Value of Emerging Technology

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Options for treatment of unilateral hearing loss have evolved to include cochlear implantation for both adults and children with single-sided deafness (SSD) and asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss (AHL). Clinicians are now faced with a myriad of treatment options that are often challenging and time consuming to navigate. The discussion will highlight issues unique to each population, with a focus on understanding who will most benefit from this technology and who may become non-users. Areas of controversy, such as age at implantation, insurance coverage, variability in outcomes, postoperative use and support, and important knowledge gaps will be debated. This Great Debate session will provide an overview of the current state of CI in adults and children with SSD/AHL and highlight pearls that can be used by general otolaryngologists to guide treatment and referrals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the impact of unilateral and asymmetric hearing loss and the current options for treatment.
  2. Identify current indications for cochlear implantation in adults and children with single sided deafness (SSD) and asymmetric.sensorineural hearing loss (AHL).
  3. Discuss specifics of CI candidacy in each group, including the impact of age at implantation, length and etiology of deafness, preoperative hearing status, speech understanding and development, vestibular function, tinnitus, and quality of life.
  4. Analyze the challenges associated with this treatment option, including insurance coverage, variability in wear time and non-users, auditory rehabilitation, educational and parental support, and access.
