PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Join us for an electrifying debate that will explore the promise and perils of operating room Black Boxes, devices inspired by the aviation industry that capture real-time data on surgeries to offer insights for quality improvement, patient safety, and care equity. Kelly M. Malloy, M.D., FACS will argue in favor of Black Boxes, while Romaine F. Johnson, M.D., M.P.H., FACS will present the opposing view. The session will be moderated by Soham Roy, M.D., FAAP, FACS. As Black Box devices are more widely adopted, they hold the potential to revolutionize surgical care by promoting transparency and accountability, but questions remain about data control, analysis, and necessary ethical guardrails. This debate will examine both the transformative potential and the complex challenges of Black Boxes, ensuring a lively and thought-provoking discussion.
