Michael Hoa, MD, is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Hoa is board certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, otology, and neurotology. Dr. Hoa serves as the medical director of the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Cochlear Implant Program which provides comprehensive cochlear implant services to both pediatric and adult populations and is the Director of Research in the department. In addition to his duties as a neurotologist (ear and skull base surgeon), Dr. Hoa is a surgeon-scientist in the intramural research program at the National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where his research program has a focus on hearing instability disorders including Meniere's disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and autoimmune inner ear disease. In addition to these interests, Dr. Hoa has an interest in hearing preservation in the setting of cochlear implants, endoscopic ear and lateral skull base surgery, and the management of complex lateral skull base diseases. Prior to his arrival at Georgetown, Dr. Hoa completed an otolaryngology residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a neurotology fellowship at the prestigious House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles. Dr. Hoa also received extensive research training at the associated House Research Institute under an NIH-sponsored institutional research training grant investigating the underlying mechanisms involved in hair cell regeneration.
