Lecturer, Assistant profesor
Faculty of Medicine - University of Porto, Portugal
Kristof Raemdonck is a researcher at the Unidade de Anatomia of the University of Porto. He obtained PhD at Imperial College London in 2011. The
work performed there focussed on the development of allergic asthma models more closely mimicking clinical disease. This resulted in the
publication of various peer reviewed research papers. His work demonstrated for the first time the involvement of a cholinergic nerve reflex in the
late asthmatic response and featured in various news websites including the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-14504186).
Following his PhD he continued his research in the field as a postdocteral researcher for the Cell & Molecular Biology, Airways Disease Section of
Imperial College London. This post was part of the EU-wide severe asthma consortium (UBIOPRED). This project brings together many academic and
pharmaceutical industrial partners and is part of the EU-IMI initiative to overcome roadblocks to developing new drugs.
He is currently engaged in airway inflammatory research on allergic rhinitis and its effects on brain circuitry. To date the focus of his work has been
on animal model development aiming to mimic human allergic rhinitis. Using these models he aims to study and elucidate allergic comorbidities
such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, mood changes, anxiety and altered emotional reactivity which negatively impact on sufferers’ lives
