Dr. Mark Prince, MD, FRCS(C), FACS. Charels Krause Professor and Chair Department of Otolaryngology-HNS, University of Michigan.
Dr. Prince joined the Royal Canadian Navy after high school and completed a Degree in Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. He earned his Medical Degree at Dalhousie University Medical School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces as a medical officer, receiving specialized training in hyperbaric and diving medicine. Dr. Prince returned to Dalhousie University and completed a residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, followed by a two-year fellowship in advanced head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery at the University of Michigan. He accepted an appointment at Dalhousie in 1998 as an Assistant Professor and served as their Otolaryngology Residency Director before joining the University of Michigan faculty in 2000. Dr. Prince served as the Chief of the ENT Section at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center from 2000 until 2014, he continues to serve there as an active part time staff member.
Dr. Prince has held a number of roles in graduate medical education including terms as residency program director, a fellowship director and served as the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education in the University of Michigan Medical School. He continues to co-lead a collaborative education initiative with the EENT department at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi Ghana.
Dr. Prince was appointed as the Chair in the Department of Otolaryngology-HNS in 2018 after serving as the interim Chair for almost 2 years. He is the author of many scientific papers and book chapters. His research laboratory published the first report of the identification of cancer stem cells in head and neck squamous cell cancer, and continues to conduct research in this exciting field.
