Dr. Matthew Mifsud MD FACS is Chief of the Division of Head & Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, within the University of South Florida Morsani department. He is also a past president of the Florida Society of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery. Under his leadership, the head & neck program at USF and clinical associate Tampa General Hospital (TGH), has grown to be a major referral center for complex disorders of the head & neck. This includes a thriving microvascular surgical program which has now performed >500 cases with a maintained high flap success rate and a focus on postoperative functional rehabilitation. He is also the founding member of the USF center for advanced salivary gland surgery. This first of its kind center in the state of Florida offers comprehensive surgical care for all salivary conditions ranging from inflammatory disorders to cancer.
Dr. Mifsud’s maintains a broad academic focus with a strong emphasis on perioperative care optimization and long-term quality of life enhancement after head & neck cancer treatment. At USF he has helped establish a multidisciplinary research consortium to address these areas of interest. This group is engaged in various projects including developing software to measure key functional outcome measures (e.g. shoulder/neck mobility), in hopes of developing personalized care plans to optimize a cancer patients’ long-term quality of life.
