Dr. Piccirillo is a Professor (Investigator Track) of Otolaryngology, Medicine, Biostatistics, and Occupational Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine and Vice Chair for Research and Director of the Clinical Outcomes Research Office for the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck. He is the course master for the first- and second-year medical student course entitled, Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine and the Director of the NIDCD-supported T32 Physician Scholars Training Program and the NCATS-supported TL1 Predoctoral Interdisciplinary Clinical Research Training Program. He is Editor of JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.
Dr. Piccirillo graduated from the University of Vermont College of Arts & Sciences (BA) and the College of Medicine (MD). He completed an otolaryngology residency at the Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany, NY. He received training in clinical epidemiology and health services research as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Fellow at Yale University. During his fellowship, Dr. Piccirillo worked with Dr. Alvan Feinstein on the development and validation of the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT), the Adult Comorbidity Evaluation-27 (ACE-27), and prognostic staging systems for cancer that incorporate patient factors. He currently conducts research into patient-specific drivers of tinnitus using ecological momentary asessment and clinical trials for patients with COVID-associated anosmia.
Dr. Piccirillo is a board-certified Otolaryngologist, a member of the Faculty Practice Plan, and a member of the Academy of Educators at Washington University.
