Jacques A. Herzog, M.D., Chief Division of Otology and Neurotology, The Center for Hearing and Balance Disorders, Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Washington University in St Louis. He currently serves as Program Director for the Neurotology Fellowship at Washington University. Dr Herzog's primary clinical focus is evaluation and management of diseases and related structures of the ear. He was one of the early advocates of small fenestra stapes surgery. He has developed minimally invasive approaches to the lateral skull base that have resulted in improved outcomes, while minimizing risk. Dr Herzog is a nationally recognized cochlear implant surgeon. He has led advancements in cochlear implantation in the areas of hybrid devices with hearing preservation, treatment of early deafened adults, single sided deafness and expansion of indications. He has been instrumental in recognizing the association of hearing loss with cognitive decline. His work in cochlear implantation in the elderly has suggested a relationship between improved hearing and delay of progression of dementia. Dr Herzog has been very active in increasing awareness of progressive hearing loss and the benefits of cochlear implantation in the severely hearing impaired through his collaborative work with hearing health care providers.
