Aristides Sismanis is a Professor and Chairman Emeritus of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia.
He received his medical degree from the University of Athens in 1973. Upon completion of his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Long Island College Hospital, a Downstate University affiliated Institution, he completed a Head and Neck Fellowship at Boston University, followed by an Otology-Neurotology fellowship with the Otology group in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1980, he joined the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University, and in 1996, he was named professor and chair of the same department. In 2008, he was appointed professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Athens, Greece, where he served until his retirement in 2016. Since 2016, he has been practicing at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.
Dr. Sismanis belongs to many professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Triologic Society, the American Otological Society, the American Head and Neck Society, and the American Neurotology Society. He is the past president of the Virginia Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Panhellenic Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He has served on many American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery committees and has participated in many national and international meetings. In the early 80s, he was the first to report on idiopathic intracranial hypertension syndrome presenting with pulsatile tinnitus. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, many of them regarding pulsatile tinnitus and idiopathic intracranial hypertension syndrome.
His clinical practice and research interests are hearing loss, pulsatile tinnitus, idiopathic intracranial hypertension syndrome, and vestibular disorders.
