Medical Student (MS4)
David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA
Los Angeles, CA, United States
Eric M. Smith (BS) is a 4th year medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA who is conducting research with UCLA's Head and Neck Surgery Department. Eric previously graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stanford University. He studied immunology and focused on immunotoxicology and the effects of wildfire smoke exposure on immune health in humans. This research introduced Eric to rhinology and allergy medicine, sparking his interest in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
At UCLA, he was mentored by Dr. Ashley Kita and Dr. Larry Hoffman. During this time, Eric became proficient in animal handling. He also has learned to use 3D printing software and has used it to develop surgical tools for Head and Neck Surgical applications. His time with Dr. Kita and Dr. Hoffman has allowed him to study the effects of hearing loss secondary to cisplatin chemotherapy usage, and potential ways to provide hearing protection. After completing research and 4th year rotations, Eric plans to apply to the field of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
