PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Substantial gender disparities in representation, rank, retention, and leadership remain across the career trajectories of physicians. Of the surgical subspecialties, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has the largest gender-based wage gap, and women also receive less grant funding, promotions, podium presentations, citations of their scholarly work, and positions among academic journals and professional societies, even when controlling for other factors. Each year, new studies emerge further characterizing these disparities, but often new knowledge gained is not widely disseminated nor incorporated into medical practice. This has resounding implications for both women and men in the current and future workforce of the field, as well as the patients they serve. This panel aims to highlight the newest research on gender equity in Otolaryngology and relevant fields. The speakers will then engage in an interdisciplinary discussion around the data, and specifically discuss strategies that have been employed for addressing underlying drivers of inequity among practicing otolaryngologists. The panel will provide a critical review of ongoing research gaps, including those that are currently under study through the Women in Otolaryngology Section. Participants will receive evidence-based recommendations targeting etiologies of inequities facing women otolaryngologists that can be implemented at the individual and institutional/unit level.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the current state and newest research regarding gender equity in Otolaryngology.
Articulate drivers of inequity and implications for practice, with a focus on the work environment, promotion and pay, and representation in leadership.
Evaluate their own circle of influence for opportunities to tackle existing gender inequities.
