PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: One goal of simulation is to reduce the incidence of rare but severe complications in surgery. Although simulation tools have demonstrated improved technical outcomes in trainees, there is limited discussion on the implementation of these tools in the ongoing education of practicing physicians. The focus of this panel discussion is to provide the insight of expert educators on creation and realization of a successful simulation and education program in rhinology. We will highlight the pros and cons of low versus high-fidelity simulation platforms by discussing experiences with 3-D models, task trainers, and virtual-reality based platforms. We will discuss limitations of commonly used competency-based evaluations (OSATS) in grading simulation performance and highlight more specific measures that aim to improve surgical performance and patient outcomes. We will discuss evidence-based practices of when these simulations should be implemented, principles of mastery learning in education to improve retention of skills, and optimal methods of feedback and debriefing for education. Finally, we will highlight how simulation can be used for telehealth, using the COVID-19 pandemic as an example.
