PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: While hypopharyngeal cancer constitutes only 3%–5% of all head and neck cancers, its prognosis remains unsatisfactory. This can be attributed to the fact that approximately 60%–85% of hypopharyngeal cancer patients are diagnosed with stage III-IV disease at the time of presentation. The lack of prominent symptoms, the tendency for submucosal spread, and a high incidence of second primary cancer also contribute to the unfavorable prognosis. Managing patients with hypopharyngeal cancer poses challenges due to the significant respiratory, swallowing, and speech functions in the pharyngolaryngeal area, impacting both function and survival outcomes.
In this program, our objective is to explore the approaches and real-world impact of hypopharyngeal cancer. The first segment centers on the evolving paradigm in surgical approaches for hypopharyngeal cancer, presented by Dr. Ichiro Tateya. Following that, Dr. Tsai will share his research findings on the survival and functional outcomes (including dysphagia, tracheostomy dependence, and gastrostomy tube dependence) of patients treated for hypopharyngeal cancer, utilizing real-time data from a multicenter national health network (TriNetX). Dr. Patravoot Vatanasapt will contribute insights from Thailand regarding healthcare access and the effects of treatment modalities on the prognosis of hypopharyngeal cancer.
