PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: As surgeons who take care of facial trauma, we are keenly aware that our patient outcomes can vary significantly due to factors that may not be related to our techniques and management styles. In fact, many of our patients have different social determinants of health that can affect their care. We hope to discuss disparities and inequalities in care of facial trauma patients. We will discuss the role of homelessness, substance use, and other socioeconomic factors. We will also discuss compliance and follow up in vulnerable patient populations and relevant preventable factors. By characterizing these challenges that patients face when receiving care after trauma, we hope to improve the way in which we ensure that our patients have adequate followup, postoperative care, and outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

To characterize and discuss various social determinants of health in facial trauma care.
To describe inequalities and healthcare disparities in facial trauma.
To outline ways in which we can start to think about these factors in our practice, and how to address these issues in the future.
