Chair of the Division of Otorhinolaryngology
University of Cape Town
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
Johan Fagan MD is Professor and Chairman of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
Following ENT training in Cape Town, he completed fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh in Head & Neck/Cranial Base Surgery, and in Otology/Neurotology. He has authored >250 peer reviewed articles and book chapters.
A major interest has been to advance otolaryngology in Africa and the Developing World. To this end, he established the Karl Storz Fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Cape Town, and is training the 18th African Head and Neck surgeon. His department also runs the only African Fellowships in Rhinology, Otology and Paediatric Otolaryngology. In 2016, he founded the African Head and Neck Society to advance HN surgery in Africa.
Because textbooks are unaffordable for many developing world surgeons, he conceived, edits and self-publishes two free open access textbooks, “The Open Access Atlas of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Operative Surgery” and the “Open Access Guide to Audiology and Hearing Aids”, chapters of which have been downloaded >4.5 million times from almost every country in the world.
