PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Bell's Palsy is the most common cause of facial paralysis and while most Otolaryngologists are well versed in the acute management, treatment of the sequelae of incomplete facial nerve recovery is an important yet often overlooked aspect of comprehensive treatment. This panel presentation will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of all types of nonflaccid facial palsy, including synkinesis, hyperkinesis, and spasm. Nonflaccid facial palsy is far more common than flaccid facial palsy and commonly encountered by general otolaryngologists and facial plastic surgeons alike. Significant treatment advances, such as selective myectomy and neurectomy, have altered the treatment algorithm for non-flaccid facial palsy over the last several years. This panel will discuss the contemporary treatment, both surgical and non-surgical, for nonflaccid facial palsy that may be incorporated into a comprehensive Otolaryngology practice. We will also review the differential diagnoses and highlight the differences between synkinesis, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm. We will also discuss the work-up and management for hemifacial spasm and how it differs from synkinesis. We aim to provide audience members comprehensive knowledge with which to counsel and manage their patients.

  1. Understand the differential diagnosis of spastic facial palsy including synkinesis vs hemifacial spasm.
  2. Incorporate non-surgical management of non-flaccid facial palsy into practice.
  3. Discuss and potentially incorporate surgical treatment options for non-flaccid facial palsy into practice.
