Hands-On Slide Tracheoplasty Techniques Using 3D-Printed Simulation Models

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This simulation session reviews the theory, design, and technical considerations for cervicothoracic slide tracheoplasty and provides hands on experience with 3D printed trachea models. Three separate pathologies treated with slide tracheoplasty will be reviewed: complete tracheal rings, bridging bronchus, and tracheoesophageal fistula. Instructors for this session will be comprised of otolaryngologists who perform slide tracheoplasty regularly in their practice and have been heavily involved in teaching these techniques in various venues. It will begin with a panel discussion reviewing the pathologies and surgical techniques for slide tracheoplasty. It will also touch on 3D printed model development and the utility of advanced surgical planning for complex airway cases. Following that, at least two thirds of the session will be dedicated to hands-on experience for participants, where they will perform slide tracheoplasty on their own individual models. Panelists will be available at approximately a 1:5 ratio to provide expertise and assist directly with the procedural simulations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Increase participant understanding of surgical considerations and techniques for cervicothoracic slide tracheoplasty for complete tracheal rings, bridging bronchus, and tracheoesophageal fistula.
  2. Provide hands-on experience and allow participants to perform slide tracheoplasties for each of the three above indications.
  3. Illustrate the use of 3D printing as a technique for complex airway surgical planning and training.
