PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: After five years of residency training, you have a broad skill set and enthusiasm. But is that the end of your surgical training? We have all been trained to be “lifelong learners,” but what does that look like for a surgeon? Fellowship offers one route for further surgical skills and more complex or unique patient clinical exposure, but even a one or two year fellowship cannot encompass all variations of a particular case or medical entity you may encounter. We often practice the way we were trained by our faculty as learners, but should we push ourselves to learn new techniques post-training? Perhaps your partners trained elsewhere and use a completely different surgical technique or approach- how do you reconcile this? Our field is constantly evolving with new techniques and tools at our disposal. How do you learn and practice new (or new to you) techniques outside a formal training setting? Our panel will use a case-based approach to discuss personal experiences on building a surgical practice while still advancing their repertoire post-training. The panel includes both fellowship trained subspecialists and comprehensive otolaryngologists who will discuss ways they expanded their practice and continue to seek technical learning opportunities.

Learning Objectives:

The audience will recognize the importance of continuous surgical learning.
The audience will compare fellowship and non-fellowship career paths.
The audience will identify multiple opportunities for post-residency surgical training.
