PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: As the United States population diversifies, and as more ethnic and racial minority individuals are requesting cosmetic procedures, there is a need for more inclusive facial plastic reconstructive surgery (FPRS) education. The emerging FPRS health disparities literature reveals disparities across the lifespan. These disparities include the need for a more comprehensive understanding of ethnic aesthetic ideals; broader awareness of treatments for conditions that are more common in non-European patients; and an understanding of how common conditions like facial aging should be addressed differently in non-European patients. In addition, there is a need to understand the concept of cultural healing aesthetics and how it can advance health equity. Other gaps in the literature include guidance on culturally appropriate education and shared decision making for minority patients who are desirous of aesthetic or reconstructive facial therapies. Moreover, there is a gap in the understanding of what surgical and non-surgical options are ideal for and create reliable aesthetic outcomes for non-European patients.

Learning Objectives:

Describe strategies to guide African American patients through the decision-making to provide culturally appropriate understanding of the risks, benefits, potential outcomes of facial plastic surgery and procedures, including recommendations on managing difficult patient encounters.
Describe the concept of healing aesthetics as a vehicle for increasing cultural competency and advancing health equity.
Identify surgical and non-surgical therapies that are safe and appropriate for African American patients seeking facial rejuvenation, including rhinoplasty, face lift, laser, fillers, and their associated complications.
