PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: We have all had patients or families who have challenged us over the years and lessons we have learned from dealing with these challenges either well or poorly. This session is designed as an expert panel with case-based discussion bringing to life scenarios of difficult, distrustful, and demanding patients and families. The panelists will walk through various techniques and approaches they have found both useful and not useful and will also discuss boundaries that they set to protect the wellbeing of both themselves and their staff. We hope to involve the audience as much as possible to address specific questions and challenges.

Learning Objectives:

Teach and demonstrate techniques for talking to difficult patients and families such as humble inquiry and others.
Teach and demonstrate techniques for diffusing tense situations or avoiding escalation of situations without compromising medical care.
Identify and employ techniques to maintain the safety (emotional, psychological, and physical) of ourselves, our colleagues and our staff in difficult or tense situations.
