Head and neck microsurgeon Ashley C. Mays, MD FACS joined the Department of Otolaryngology at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in May 2022, bringing a new capability to Cleveland Clinic’s five-hospital regional health system in Florida and a passion for patient care. A board-certified otolaryngologist, Dr. Mays is fellowship trained in head and neck surgical oncology and total body microvascular reconstruction. Dr. Mays received her medical education at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and completed her otolaryngology residency at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She also completed a two-year fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Florida, Dr. Mays was assistant professor and Director of Quality at Louisiana State University’s Department of Otolaryngology, where she maintained a thriving surgical and teaching practice. She was recognized for her contributions to resident and medical student education during that time. In her current role at Cleveland Clinic Florida, she is the Co-Director of Surgical Operations at Cleveland Indian River Hospital, and the Regional Director of Quality for the Integrated Surgical Institute of Cleveland Clinic Florida. She has made research contributions to the field of head and neck oncology and reconstructive surgery and co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. She also serves on numerous national committees and workgroups. Her academic interests center largely around process analysis and quality improvement initiatives in the reconstructive and head and neck cancer domains. Dr Mays has been instrumental in improving patient safety, education, and engagement through targeted cancer and surgery-related process improvement initiatives.
